__Math Pathways__

__Math Options through Class of 2020:____IB Math Studies__– This class is an IB Math option for students preferring to take Pre-Calculus and/or Calculus and/or Statistics concurrently with Math Studies (instead of Math SL or Math HL). Math Studies is taken in the same semester but meets 1-2 times weekly after school. Students take the IB exam in either grade 11 or 12.

__IB Math SL__– a 2-year course covering Pre-Calculus and Calculus designed for students who wish to complete an IB Math class as a well-rounded part of the high school experience. The IB Exam occurs after completion of IB Math SL 1 and IB Math SL 2 in grades 11 or 12.

__IB Math HL__– a 3-year course covering Pre-Calculus and 2 years of Calculus. This class is designed for the student who may wish to focus on STEM after high school and is ready to learn concepts at a faster pace. The IB Exam occurs in 12th grade after completion of Pre-HL Math, IB HL Math 1 and IB HL Math 2.

__Math Options Class of 2021 onwards:__

*SL Option: Applications and Interpretation*Learning Recommendation: grade of B or better in Algebra 2

This 2-year course meets the needs of students interested in Math, but not headed into a STEM major. This course places an emphasis on statistics and real-world applications of mathematics. Students showing mastery will be prepared to enter college level calculus.

*HL Option: Analysis and Approaches*Learning Recommendation: grade of B or better both semesters of Pre-HL Math (MTH402)

This 2-year course meets the needs of students who have a passion for math and are interested in pursuing a STEM major. This course is for those who enjoy exploring math at a deeper level, specifically with a calculus focus. Mastery of course content will allow students to enter a 2nd year college calculus.

__Advice for acceleration of your math pathway__While SHS staff does not recommend pathway acceleration, we understand that sometimes circumstances warrant such a move. If you must accelerate to meet your goals, please use the following guidance:

- -Use the 7 period day to take Geometry and Algebra 2 concurrently during grade 9 or 10 (following the year you take Algebra 1).

- -Take Geometry over the summer or online during grades 9-10 following successful completion of Algebra 1.

__DO NOT__recommend accelerating through Algebra 2 at any time, as the contents of this course are foundational to success in IB Math (SL and HL). Gaps that occur in compressed Algebra 2 courses invariably hurt student conceptual understanding and course performance in more advanced levels of math.
